An ancient Japanese healing method that arrived in the West during the 1970s has become a popular choice for those who seek alternative avenues in healing and wholeness.
What is Reiki?
Reiki, a Japanese word pronounced Ray-kee, is essentially the life force energy present within every living thing and exists independent of the awareness of it or the belief in it. Flowing from the universe, Reiki energy is connected to organs and systems within the human body and directly impacts physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
Life force energy enters the body through what are known as chakras, or wheels. There are said to be over eighty thousand of these spinning vortexes but there are only seven primary chakras. Sometimes, due to stress or worry or just everyday living, these chakras can get blocked or sluggish like a motionless body of water that becomes stagnant, resulting in many different kinds of physical, mental, and emotional issues. Some of the conditions caused by these energy blocks are:
- physical or mental dis-eases or illnesses
- pain
- fear
- stress
- emotional traumas
- insomnia
- financial situations
- relationship issues
Many of these distresses can be significantly reduced through Reiki healing.
Reiki Healing and Reiki Practitioners
Reiki healing is a soothing and relaxing treatment that benefits the whole self by restoring a harmonious energy flow. A Reiki treatment is done by a Reiki practitioner who has been not so much trained as they are attuned to Reiki energy. The practitioner serves as a channel and uses a laying on of hands technique to move life force energy from the universe to the recipient.
What to Expect During a Reiki Treatment
During a Reiki session the receiver will be fully clothed and the treatment will usually last an hour or so, depending on the extent of healing needed.Typically, the practitioner will place their hands on points of the body that correspond with the primary chakras. Some practitioners are intuitive and place their hands where they "feel" the energy needs to go. Either way, Reiki energy is very efficient and will automatically flow to where the energy imbalances are in the body, sort of like liquid poured into a cracked vessel will fill up the cracked places first.
Reiki is not painful at all. A Reiki treatment is comforting and soothing and a warm, tingling sensation might be noticed when the practitioner places their hands on the body.
Sometimes healing is experienced immediately with Reiki and other times it takes a few days for the energy to do its work.
Reiki Healing is a Smart Choice in Alternative Medicine
As an alternative and holistic healing approach, Reiki is a balancing and restorative therapy that promotes a healthy, happy, and whole life.
